“Light in the Lord”

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.”

What does it mean to live “in Christ?” What do you do to know God better and to be rooted and established in love? If you have lived in darkness, how do you live in the light? These are the questions that Paul deals with in the second half of Ephesians. Klyne Snodgrass writes that “people take on the character of the sphere in which they live.” Paul describes behaviors or spheres of living that he labels “darkness” and “light.”

“Rooted and Established in Love”

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.”

In the “Walk to Emmaus” retreat, participants spend three days studying various aspects of the Christian faith together, and then on Saturday evening are ushered into a specially decorated room, where they sing “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” Having been rooted and established in love, in the Gospel, it is time for worship, for a lifting of hearts to the eternal, to Christ himself. “Live By the Spirit”

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”

In Galatians 5, Paul writes of issues that were very prominent in the ancient world and remain so in our world as well. He writes of freedom, law, flesh and Spirit. Read more

35th Anniversary Celebration

 On Oct. 21, we will have a special service and lunch together to mark our 35th anniversary here at Libertyville Covenant. As part of it, we are putting together a video presentation that shows our church and its community.
